Rollers of the Realm

Game: Rollers of the Realm
Developer: Phantom Compass
Publisher: Atlus
Release: November 2014
Genre: Pinball RPG

Rollers of the Realm combines the frantic physics of classic arcade pinball with the character-driven adventure of fantasy role-playing games. Bounce, spin, and battle through scenes of an epic storyline with a band of medieval misfits tasked with reclaiming the world from dark and ancient magic.

So you think there are not enough Pinball role playing games on the PS Vita? Well the joke is on you, because the upcoming Vita game Rollers of the Realm is about to be released. The game is played like a pinball game with different tables where your characters are represented by the ball. Each table is a level you need to pass through and you need to use the party members that are best suited for the task. The party members/balls have different abilities. For example, the rogue has a dog (another ball) that can join the table and the Knight is a heavier ball that can crush walls etc. There is of course treasure to be found and abilities to gain, as in any RPG.  There is a long and excellent video made by Joystiq where they play through the first tables together with the developers. This article over at Polygon is also pretty good if you want more information.

Freedom Wars

Game: Freedom Wars
Developer: Sony Japan
Publisher: Sony
Release: TBA 2014 (EU)(NA)
Genre: Action RPG

In the not-too-distant future, atmospheric pollution has devastated the earth and resources have become scarce. Harsh new penal communities have formed in order to survive… The communities, known as Panopticons, battle to secure what precious few resources remain.

Freedom Wars is a PS Vita exclusive title that has been released in Japan and Asia earlier this year. It will reach the west later in 2014. Freedom Wars takes place in a very distant future where Earths surface is uninhabitable, forcing humans to live underground in cities known as Panopticons, where the government has total control of every human. You play as a criminal forced by the state to fight giant monsters. Gameplay wise, you use firearms or handheld weapons to fight in Monster Hunter style missions. The game is supposed to get multiplayer support later where you can team up with or fight against other people. Freedom Wars has sold a lot of copies in Japan but there is some critisism of it being way too hard, so there might be a patch later on with lowered difficulty level. Here is some gameplay for you to check out.

Invizimals: The Resistance

Game: Invizimals: The Resistance
Developer: Novorama
Publisher: Sony Europe
Release: Summer 2014 (EU)
Genre: AR, Creature Collecting

With an all new story, featuring Keni, Jazmin, Professor Dawson plus the kids from the TV series you can expect a rollercoaster adventure once more. Invizimals are now everywhere! LET THE HUNT BEGIN!

Invizimals: The Resistance is an Augmented Reality game developed by Spanish developer Novorama. The game will be released in Europe in 2014 as a sequel to Invizimals: The Alliance. There is no word yet on a US release, but since Invizimals: The Alliance will get a US release in 2014, The Resistance will probably follow as well eventually. The Invizimals games are creature collecting games, similar to Pokémon. In southern Europe the franchise is very popular and you can find Invizimals collectible plastic figures as well as Invizimals collecting cards. There's even an animated series! Anyway, the game relies hevily on the AR features of the Vita. You look for creatures in your home using the Vita's camera and when you find one, you need to capture it. This trailer shows how it works. The game uses something called SmartAR which means you don't have to use the AR cards at all! And as usual, once you capture your creature you will fight other creatures and make it level up so that it transforms into a more powerful form. More information can be found here in this blog post at the official Playstation website.
